Your wedding cake…
The towering, sugary crown on your big day. The most delicious memory you’ll ever share. The thing brides agonize over the most — right behind their actual dress.
What would you do if, after choosing the perfect cake for your perfect day, tragedy struck?
That’s exactly what happened to newlyweds Dina and Johnny Smart.
The Metro reports that at their reception, Dina’s father Andy picked up their cake to show it off to gathered guests during his father-of-the-bride speech.
Andy starts off by saying he needs to thank Sam, who made the wedding cake. “I’d just like to say – has anyone looked at this cake, because it is absolutely fantastic,” he begins, as he moves over to lift it.
In video recordings from the reception, poor Dina can be heard in the background saying “Don’t lift it, dad!”
No such luck.
While trying to lower the cake back to the table, Andy lost his grip. And guests can be heard in the background, shrieking and gasping in horror.
If the guests were horrified, imagine how the bride and groom must have felt!
But within seconds, Dad (who must be a real treat on April Fool’s Day) announced that it was only a joke — the real cake was safely hidden away in another room! Turns out, he’d known exactly what he was doing!
“I’d been planning it for six months and I didn’t even tell my wife. On the way to the church I was having second thoughts – it could go one way or the other… I didn’t want to make it last too long. I didn’t want her to cry and have mascara running down her face. I made sure it only lasted a few seconds before I pointed out the real cake at the back.”
The bride, who must love her father very much (along with being a good sport in general). The Torquay Herald Express interviewed her after.
“I was mad for a couple of minutes afterwards, particularly the minute or so before he announced the real one was at the back… My husband Johnny had no idea at all, no one knew except my dad and Sam.The whole room was screaming and in shock one minute and then crying with laughter the next. It was such a good prank I think, looking back at it now of course!”
We’re not sure how we feel about the prank itself… other than to be thankful it wasn’t our wedding or one of our cakes! But still, bride and groom found the humor in it, and that’s what’s most important.
That and the fact that there was still cake!
Dina says, “Johnny and I will definitely never forget our wedding day, that’s for sure!”
We think that may be the understatement of the century!
