‘Tis the season… for baking!

And while that’s an everyday thing for us, we realize that the holidays is the only time some folks get around to baking. So we’ve gathered some hints and hacks that might help you through your projects with your sanity intact! (Thanks to Pinterest and Lifehacker for the great visuals!)

Cookies

Cookies are a holiday staple. But what if you don’t have all of your staples to make this staple?!? It’s not the end of the world! Cookies can handle a little tinkering, just bear in mind the final results will vary depending on what you use.

But say you don’t have the fine motor skills of a brain surgeon… That doesn’t mean you can’t decorate your finished cookies. Get creative! Use a medicine syringe for fine details! (And bear in mind that messy cookies can still taste amazing, so give yourself a break!)

Cupcakes

Moving on to cupcakes… Have you ever felt like your own fall flat in comparison to bakery cupcakes? Here’s a little hint. Adjust your time and temperature!

And if you throw your cupcakes in the oven before realizing you don’t have icing, there’s still no need to panic. Just place a marshmallow on the top of each for the last five minutes of cooking!

You’ll wind up with a creamy, gooey, toasted marshmallow topping!

General Hints & Hacks

These aren’t baked-good-specific, but they are handy! (A couple of these we wish we’d known just starting out!)

  • Soften your butter without melting it, which is what usually happens if you try to take a shortcut through the microwave!

  • Beat your batter without wrecking the kitchen! If you’ve ever had dry ingredients or splatters of batter fly everywhere (not that we’ve made this mistake… often), save your cleanup efforts with a paper plate!

  • Bake without eggs! Whether through preference, or because you didn’t count your eggs before you got started, you can bake without eggs! (Even though your grandma, like ours, may have told you it’s impossible.)

And finally, make your baking as beautiful as it is delicious with these color charts! If you’ve ever wanted to pull your hair out over mint green Christmas trees or wondered how many drops of what would make the right orange for a sunset, we have the answers!!

Just keep in mind that for certain colors (like black, or true red) you’ll need the paste concentrates rather than the drops!
